A small local church in the Grantham community starts their second year experience in the live-nativity business and is gearing up for this season's events.
The Selah Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) will host it’s a live drive-through nativity December 12-23, 2008.
"We hope this presentation of the story of Jesus' birth will remind or teach this wonderful story to all who attend," said Cathy Jernigan and Denny Tart the Nativity Co Chairpersons.
Some 75 church members, most of them youth, are part of Selah's nativity scene, which takes place outside the church building.
About 15 children play roles in the nativity, and there are also light and sound technicians, set builders, a narrator and about 60 adult members who lift their praises for two night shows -- starting at 6:00 p.m. and end at 8:00 pm.
It's a major -- and sometimes humorous and experiences -- undertaking, Tart said. “How will we control donkeys start to neigh during the drive through"? “Or when you're outside in 25-degree weather or a chilling rain”?
But Jernigan said it's worth it -- especially for children, for whom the Christmas story really hits home if they can actually see it happen.
This Friday and Saturday, the church will celebrate their second of drive-through ministry. Live animals and performers tell the Christmas story -- but in a modern way church members hope they will attract the passers-by and give them some time to rethink about Jesus life.
"We celebrate the birth of Christ just like other Christian churches do," said Patrick Muston, Selah’s Reverend. "And we just want to get the word out that this time of year isn't just about Santa Claus”.
“Our nativity crew faces perils from the weather and from trying to organize such a large event”. "Everybody has their job," Jernigan said, "and we try to work as a team."
We have 10 scenes...each will be about Jesus Life-1st scene: Caesar annouce everyone must pay their taxes-Joseph and Mary packs up, 2nd scene: No rooms for Mary and Joseph at Bethlehem Inn, 3rd scene: Jesus is born, 4th scene: Angels coming from Heaven, 5th scene: Angels telling Shepherds the Lord is born, 6th scene:Shepherds and Wise Men bring gifts to the Lord, 7th scene: Jesus is a Carpenter, 8th scene: Jesus is talking to children, 9th scene:The Lord Table. 10th scene: Three Crosses where Jesus died.
