Tar Kiln Trail Hike

How did North Carolina become known as the "Tar Heel State?" Come explore the history behind tar kilns and their important role in North Carolina's naval stores industry. You will get a glimpse of the past when you come across real tar kilns which ruled North Carolina in the 1700's and 1800's. Meet at the Ivey Gut Parking Lot and dress appropriately for the weather. This easy 1 mile hike will last approximately 1 hour.
